Temperature fluctuations and mixtures of equilibrium states in the canonical ensemble

چکیده
It has been suggested recently that ‘q-exponential’ distributions which form the basis of Tsallis’ non-extensive thermostatistical formalism may be viewed as mixtures of exponential (Gibbs) distributions characterized by a fluctuating inverse temperature. In this paper, we revisit this idea in connection with a detailed microscopic calculation of the energy and temperature fluctuations present in a finite vessel of perfect gas thermally coupled to a heat bath. We find that the probability density related to the inverse temperature of the gas has a form similar to a χ density, and that the ‘mixed’ Gibbs distribution inferred from this density is non-Gibbsian. These findings are compared with those obtained by a number of researchers who worked on mixtures of Gibbsian distributions in the context of velocity difference measurements in turbulent fluids as well as secondaries distributions in nuclear scattering experiments.

Canonical thermostatics of ideal gas in the frame work of generalized uncertainty principle
The statistical consequences of minimal length supposition are investigated for a canonical ensemble of ideal gas. These effects are encoded in the so-called Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) of the second order. In the frame work of the considered GUP scenario, a unique partition function is obtained by using of two different methods of quantum and classical approaches. It should be noti...
متن کاملQuantum noise thermometry for bosonic Josephson junctions in the mean-field regime
Bosonic Josephson junctions can be realized by confining ultracold gases of bosons in multiwell traps and studied theoretically with the M-site Bose-Hubbard model. We show that canonical equilibrium states of the M-site Bose-Hubbard model may be approximated by mixtures of coherent states, provided the number of atoms is large and the total energy is comparable to kBT. Using this approximation,...

In this paper, we consider a system including two maghnetodielectric slabs with different temperature that are placed in vacuum at zero temperature and very short separation distances from each other. Based on the canonical quantization of the electromagnetic field in the presence of dissipative media, we investigate the radiative heat transfer arising from thermal and quantum fluctuations in o...
متن کاملFluctuations in shear-jammed states: A statistical ensemble approach
Granular matter exists out of thermal equilibrium, i.e. it is athermal. While conventional equilibrium statistical mechanics is not useful for characterizing granular materials, the idea of constructing a statistical ensemble analogous to its equilibrium counterpart to describe static granular matter was proposed by Edwards and Oakshott more than two decades ago. Recent years have seen several ...
متن کاملEmergence of equilibrium thermodynamic properties in quantum pure states. II. Analysis of a spin model system.
A system composed of identical spins and described by a quantum mechanical pure state is analyzed within the statistical framework presented in Part I of this work. We explicitly derive the typical values of the entropy, of the energy, and of the equilibrium reduced density matrix of a subsystem for the two different statistics introduced in Part I. In order to analyze their consistency with th...
